i pass by Brooklyn homes smelling food that reminds me of my grandmother. windows are cracked and i hear people laughing and talking over one another. i smile, aching to be inside.
laughing with my family in roanoke
    eating food my grandmother made
my dad and brother are debating something I chose to ignore
i close my eyes and the smell is enough to take me back
when my eyes open and i’m back on the sidewalk
putting my headphones on, i continue walking away, never breathing out
   breathing in until i can’t
the smell that forever reminds me
